The Benefits of Decluttering - Relaxation

The science of relaxation is really very simple – when we know our house is in order, we relax. It’s why when we go to a spa, a hotel or clean, bright office space we automatically start to breathe a little easier, our shoulders go down and our nervous systems comes to rest. Clear, clean looked-after spaces simply hold us in a state of restfulness in a way that cluttered, untidy, disorganised spaces do not.

In some ways, this comes back to time efficiency, when we know all our responsibilities are dealt with, all our paperwork is in hand, that should you urgently need something - you can find it without scaring the cat as you fly around the house, pulling your hair out going, ‘Keys, where are my keys!’ When we can lay our hands on anything we may need, we relax.

Equally, when time has been spent keeping only possessions that are loved or support our lives, our homes and our businesses literally sparkle from love. It might sound like something from the 60s, but research published by Physiology Today, discovered that women living in cluttered, unclean houses, filled with unfinished projects were more likely to feel depressed and suffer from fatigue. Equally woman who lived in clean, clutter-free spaces found their homes to be restorative and restful. It’s no surprise when you consider that clutter is a constant reminder that you haven’t attended to something. You haven’t managed to clean, you’ve not sorted the washing, you haven’t finished that project, you forgot to send those cards… all of this internal dialogue is exhausting and also keeps you in a state of continual self-judgement. You deserve more, you deserve a supportive environment that celebrates you and helps you feel ready to face the day.

The same, of course, can be said of businesses that are disorganised. They can add to that feeling of being stressed, stretched and out of control, creating anxiety you don’t need and that saps your creative potential.

Most people can relate to most of these states, yet few of us give the time to cleaning and decluttering. Recently Maria Kondo, author and world renowned declutter stated, “We are not taught how to clean’. That statement initially surprised me and then turned a light bulb on. No one knows how to organise themselves, it’s a fact unless you have a natural inclination towards this, you won’t even enjoy it. So why not employ someone who just loves it, someone who will support, teach and stand with you to organise your world without judgement, bringing a wealth of creative ideas and solutions to bear on your home or work environments.
