The Benefits of Decluttering - Space for Creativity
Space for creativity is not just about physical space, it is about the mental and emotional relaxation that then creates the space within us to be creative. Following on from time efficiency and relaxation, taking care of the practical and the emotional worlds leads to an upwelling of creative energy. Being creative is our natural state, it might surprise the artistically challenged. But stop a moment to consider your own creative potential.
Anything we do in life that is an act of creation, so this therefore creative. Cooking food, creating an excel sheet, coming up with an idea for a birthday party, design ideas for your home or even just the way you group the soaps together is your creative impulse working through you. However when we are tired, stressed and frustrated we are likely to also be cluttered and disorganised, leading to the suppression of our creative impulse or joy of life.
When we live in clear, clean environments these frustrations and mental upwellings of negative thoughts disappear (or at least are lightened). You will then find you want to spend time in your kitchen creating or you’ll pull out all your holiday photos and spend some time putting together a beautiful keepsake. It’s a natural impulse and it is enhanced when we feel relaxed.
This is equally important for our work, especially if you are a small business or sole trader as you are constantly responding to the needs of your business. When you’re feeling organised and able to find things easily, you are supporting yourself and your creative energy for your work comes alive. This feeling of aliveness applied to our businesses literally wakes them up, breathes new life into the day to day and replenishes our resolve to get the job done.
Aside from internal space, yes there is also ‘space needed for creativity’ both in time and in physical space. As discussed in my time efficiency blog, when our homes and businesses are running smoothly, our time is opened up creating space for new ventures. Whilst clearing our homes and offices of clutter, it suddenly opens up spaces, storage areas and possibly even whole rooms to be used for creative projects. Maybe with all the free time and space you’ll discover your love of photography or painting, you’ll suddenly start to knit that jumper you always wanted to do or you’ll make jam, finally, just like your gran used to do. Decluttering opens up your world, so its worth investing in.
